Model Shoot of the Summer
If you take photos of people (now who doesn’t, be it friends, family or strangers?) Cascades Park in Bloomington is the place to be tonight (Thursday, June 30) between 6 and 8 PM. Kip May is gathering the Bloomington Photo Club’s Portrait Focus Group together to photograph a diverse and eclectic group of models. The club members have been divided into teams and have assignments for different locations in the park. This is your chance to come observe how to pose and photograph people in an outdoor setting, something you are going to do or want to do yet this summer.
Photographing people correctly means finding the right settings, dialing in your camera for the existing conditions, posing your model/subject, and giving them feedback to get the best possible image. Kip and his team leaders are good at this, really good at this. So come on out and observe, take notes, get better at what you find yourself doing all the time.
It’s fun, it’s free, it’s right on your doorstep. Cadscades Park at the big shelter house near the Tibetan monastery. Six to eight PM. Be there or be square.

What is the best camera for you? The one you have with you, of course! While my wife and I were in Cascades Park scouting locations for a model shoot we found some of the best models of the summer … and me with no camera. Sue to the rescue! She had her G11 with her and she saved the day.

I didn’t get the names of these folks, but my hat is off to them. Hometown, summertime fun is hard to beat … and they were having a blast! The equipment? Cheap, from Wal-mart. The inspiration? Priceless!

When you think summertime in Bloomington you naturally think of our parks, and Cascades is a good one. For a long time to come, however, when I think of summertime it’s gonna be of these fine folks and their 56-gallon waterslides.

I just wanted to show the beautiful results you can get with the CoffeeShop’s Creamy Chocolate B&W action (scroll down two posts to catch up or refresh your memory). The action just has a hint of something in it that softens the black-and-white conversion in a most pleasing way. Check out the CoffeeShop’s other actions. There may be something there for either Photoshop or Lightroom that catches your eye.
Read MoreAdobe Photoshop CS5 Brush Problem
Here is a quick tip if you are experiencing a problem while trying to increase brush size in Adobe Photoshop CS5: update your video card. While playing with the trial version of that (fantastic!) program I began to lose parts of my brush when I increased it beyond a small sized diameter. I researched the problem on line and tried a solution I found in the dpreview forums. Determine your video card (via Control Panel, System, Hardware, Manage devices, Display adapters if on a PC), then go to the net and the home page of your card’s manufacturer. Look for downloads/updates of that driver and follow the installation directions on their site. Forum participants indicated it worked for them and it worked flawlessly for me (with an NVIDEA card).
Try CS5; you’ll be impressed. And if you experience a brush problem, don’t fret. You already know the solution.
