Vacation Camera Roundup

dpreview is a noted site for camera and lens reviews for good reason: they are thorough, honest, and up-to-date. Today they have published a roundup of vacation cameras you might be considering for this summer’s big trip. Click here to go directly to the conclusion page (the heart of the matter). Then go backward to look more closely at test results and conclusions for individual qualities.

Now, what do we mean when considering a vacation camera? Well, lots of us like to have the ability to zoom in on a subject. We also want some kind of wider angle to capture at least some landscapes wider out and maybe family groups. Theses cameras all do that. A camera needs to be well-constructed, dependable, and capable of shooting in low light as well as outdoors under ideal conditions. This roundup is just what you are looking for in that regard.

On a personal note, one of my close friends recently bought the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 for his daughter, an avid traveller who is far from an advanced photographer. I helped research his purchase and have been interested in the results. The camera takes great images, is easy to use, and is very user friendly. In other words, she and her family love it. I have other friends with Panasonic compacts and have owned the FZ-20 in the past. If you need a personal recommendation, you can do far worse than go with the Panasonic line of travel cameras.

In any event take a tour of the vacation cameras dpreview has to offer. If you are in the market for a new compact that covers most if not all of the bases, I bet one of these is just what you are looking for.

    Hey Jim,

Thanks for the heads up on the vacation cameras review. I’ve been using the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3, the predecessor to the ZS5 and ZS7 for 3 months now, and am very pleased with it. The Leica lens is excellent. It takes surprisingly good video using the AVCHD Lite codec.
